Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Gender Therapist

Dr. April Owen

thumbnail_Logo Revised.jpg

I obtained my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Auburn University and my master's and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. I completed an American Psychological Association accredited doctoral internship with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and I also completed a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship through University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

I am licensed to practice psychology in the state of Texas. I have provided therapy services to diverse populations in a variety of settings throughout my career including outpatient clinics, residential treatment and forensic facilities, hospitals and medical centers, nursing and rehabilitation homes, as well as public schools and college counseling centers. My specialties are in working with LGBTQIA+ clientele, particularly with transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals.

I love Austin and the unique people that make up this great city. I try to stay active in this exciting community by engaging in volunteering and fundraising for non-profit and charitable organizations around town. I currently serve on the Leadership Team for Girl Advocacy League, a partner and giving circle for the Girls Empowerment Network. I am also a faculty member for the Queer and Trans Affirming Professional certification program. I have previously served on the Board of Directors for Out Youth as well as Waterloo Counseling, both of which are Austin area non-profit organizations providing counseling services and more to the LGBTQIA+ community. I am a 2020 Austin Under 40 Award winner, the winner of Auburn University's Women of Distinction Alumnae Award, and I was selected as a member of the Leadership Austin Essential Class of 2019.

I am passionate about the work that I do and I feel very privileged that people are willing to share their stories, vulnerabilities, and aspirations with me. I think and hope you will find me to be a personable and genuine individual who is open-minded, thoughtful, and helpful to you. I also hope that you find my office space to be warm, comfortable, and less formal and stiff than traditional medical settings. Some photos of my office are posted below to help you get a sense of the space in case this is important to you.
